Gold Headed Cane Presented to Confederate Brigadier General George P. Doles. Doles was elected Captain of the Baldwin Blues prior to the war, and with the coming of hostilities the unit became Co. H of the 4th Georgia Inf. with Doles appointed Colonel of the regiment of May 9, 1861. Doles led the Fourth Georgia through the Peninsula Campaign where he was wounded at Malvern Hill. Returning to the regiment he fought at Antietam and after ably handling the brigade when the commander was wounded, he was promoted to Brigadier General on Nov. 1, 1862. The actions of Doles' brigade were critical on the first day at Gettysburg in turning back the Union XI Corps. At Spotsylvania Court House his brigade was decimated suffering 650 killed, wounded and captured. Doles was killed by a Union sharpshooter at the Battle of Cold Harbor on June 2, 1864.

The cane is 36" overall with a black painted hardwood shaft, the tip is missing. The magnificent gold head is 2 3/4" long and covered with engraved and embossed scroll and floral designs in deep relief. The presentation on the top of the cane reads as follows; "FROM THE / BALDWIN BLUES / TO / Their Commander / CAPT. GEO. DOLES / JULY 4th 1859." Shaft of the cane shows some scattered scratches/scuff to the finish but excellent, the gold head is perfect.

A most attractive pre war artifact with strong Confederate association presented to one of the Confederacy's most gallant Brigadiers.
