Gettysburg Campaign. The little town of Newville, Pa. is invaded by the Rebels on June 30th 1863.
This 3 page letter in ink was written by James K. Klink, a store keeper in Newville, Pa. Newville is in Cumberland County, Pa. Klink has a sense of humor as in the heading he has written:

    " (Southern Confederacy)
    Newville June 30th 1863"

The Confederate invasion of Pennsylvania has taken place and Klink is upset about it:

"As we are surrounded by the Rebs, I thought it would be interesting to you to know how we like Jeff Davis' rule. Well, we don't like it. Nor would you folks. We have no stores here, no business, no nothing. Part of our goods when we last heard from them were in Snyder Co. God knows where the balance are."

"They have been in our place, and I wish they never had seen us. I tell you, Gundy, if the Government allows this force to travel out of this state the way they came in, why we will never be safe from the Rebs. They say their whole force are coming into this state. The way they do is to drive a team up to the stores, and if they find any goods, load them all in, then drive away, and they take horses, cattle, and meat. Everything that they can use."

"If you men could see us now, you would think we were the most forsaken men you ever saw. We have no mails here for better than ten days. Rail Road, bridges burnt. The Rail Road destroyed. Telegraphs cut & torn down, and the only way that we can get any letters off is by way of Perry Co. We have seen but two City Papers for a week."

"You may say we are literally destitute and we see no prospect in the future as yet, but hope that the black clouds may soon pass away. My impression is, gathered from the Rebs of course, is that they are now agoing to make our state the battle ground. Hope they will be fooled. We had a report that Jenkins & some of his men were taken prisoners, but don't believe it."

"We heard that Hooker was relieved from his command. Such a vacillating policy as the Administration is passing in a time like this. Seems to me to be worse than childish. I will now close as the man who carries the letters to Perry County will soon start. Our best regards to you all and hope you may never see what we see & hear. Yours Truly Jas. K. Klink"

A great picture of the frustration of the citizens of Pennsylvania just prior to the battle of Gettysburg that would be fought the next day. From the Calvin Packard Civil War Battlefield Letter Collection.
