George Thurston Civil War Naval Archive with Gideon Welles Documents (4) Signed. A small group of letters and documents related to George Thurston's career in the U.S. Navy, including four documents signed by Gideon Welles, as Secretary of the Navy. Archive spans the years from May 9, 1854 through July 7, 1864. The Naval Department documents signed by Welles include Thurston's appointment to acting Third Assistant Engineer, two acknowledgements of leave due to medical reasons, and Thurston's resignation on July 7, 1864.

The other letters in the group include Thurston's handwritten resignation as acting Third Assistant Engineer, dated March 11, 1864, as well as earlier recommendations and letters commending Thurston's conduct while in service. A letter from Acting 1st Assistant & Senior Engineer, Claude Babcock, dated May 7, 1864, praises Thurston for "the uniform correctness of your deportment and strict attention to duty you have displayed while under my charge as an engineer and I would cheerfully recommend you to all as a careful energetic and trustworthy Engineer. I take this occasion to state that I should be pleased to have you at any time as an assistant on my vessel that I may be attached to."

Condition: Letters and documents have flatten creases from folding, light to moderate toning at edges. Some light foxing in places, overall very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
