    Description

George Matthews Harding: Original Graphite Drawing, "Baring and his Drum" from the Saturday Evening Post. The drawing pictures a Civil War soldier carrying a wounded comrade to the rear as the soldiers around them retreat from the battlefield. The drawing, on art-board, measures 24" x 19" and is matted to an overall size of 28" x 24". The verso has a printed paper label that reads, "In handling this drawing please remember that it is valuable to the Saturday Evening Post as an original for sale and for permanent exhibition...". Very fine.

George Harding, the younger brother of illustrator Charlotte Harding, was admitted to Howard Pyles illustration classes in Wilmington, Delaware. Harding found a market for his work with The Saturday Evening Post and other major magazines. He was one of eight official artists sent overseas with the A.E.F. during World War I, with roving assignments to document the war in drawings and paintings. In his drawings, he was concerned more with the effect of war on the men themselves than with portraying panoramic scenes of battlefields or ruins. These are now part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. He subsequently taught illustration at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
