    George Armstrong Custer: Important April 9,1865 Broadside Bidding Farewell to His Troops.
    Extremely rare addressed to the officers of the Third Cavalry Division and crudely printed on plain stock most likely field printed in the aftermath following General Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Some overall signs of aging as shown, and professionally mounted to stabilize deterioration along original fold lines. Minor paper loss at two points in the ornamental border. Period pencil notation at bottom indicates that it belonged to a member of the 2nd West Virginia. Our research has turned up but one other copy.
    Custer had played a key role in bringing the Civil War to a successful conclusion. His meteoric rise led to the youngest major generalship in the Army's history. His command of the 3rd Cavalry cleared the Confederates from the strategic Shenandoah Valley, leading to a prominent role in isolating and defeating the remnants of the Army of Northern Virginia. Custer was present at the surrender signing and by some accounts presented with the table on which the document was signed by General Grant. Various flyers with congratulatory messages emanated from Custer and were widely reproduced. However this variety is prohibitively rare, and should excite great interest from Custer and Civil War paper collectors alike. Size 7.75" x 9.75".
