General Henry W. Benham LS Regarding Petersburg. 2-page letter signed, on bifolium stationery with blank integral leaf, Boston, Massachusetts, March 22, 1871, from Benham to George W. Reed of New York City. He replies to a request for information regarding troops "which I brought up from City Point to the support of Genl. Parke on the last day of fighting before Petersburg." The letter seems to be an amalgam of handwriting divided between secretarial and that of Benham. He discusses receiving orders from Grant and Meade to have his troops put in readiness to assist General Parke. "...going forward myself to learn from Genl. Parke where he would have them, one of Collis' regiments, the Zouaves got up in time, as I saw them, to go into the captured redoubts just as our men were worn out with holding them for the 12 hours, and so opportunely, as to secure the colors of one N.Y. regiment, as I was told, which had been left behind, and would probably have been in possession of the rebels in two or three minutes, as well as those forts or redoubts, rather... And, with the Engineers of this command, I entered the city with Wilcox just after daylight on the morning of the 3rd and commenced the restoration of the bridges... some regiments of cavalry... were placed under my charge, with the city of Petersburg itself." Sold with engraved CDV.
