Framed Group of Two Items Related to Maj. William Worthington Russell. The frame contains the following two items: a 6 3/4" X 7 1/2" pre-printed, in red ink, and illuminated in gilt, card, on which is mounted a 4 1/4" X 1 1/4" strip of red silk with stitching visible on one end and white 1 1/2" silk fringe on the other which, is identified as a "Piece of the flag that waved over Fort McHenry, Baltimore, Md. when the "Star Spangled Banner" was written....." It further states that the piece was, "Presented to A. W. Russell Jr, December 27, 1896 , by his aunt, Miss Mary McPherson Russell who received it from her brother, the late Major William Worthington Russell, United States Marine Corps." While a fascinating story it is known the actual Star Spangled Banner was constructed of wool bunting, making the history, as provided, unlikely. It is certainly possible it was in some way associated with the flag, or another flag that was present during the Ft. McHenry battle, but is not likely an actual piece of the Star Spangled Banner.

Also in the frame is a Civil War period "Brady's Album Gallery No. 355 Group / General Marcy And Friends / Camp Winfield Scott, near Yorktowne, May 2, 1862." About perfect condition, just some minor even fading, with period pencil ID of the subjects on the verso, including Major Russell. Fascinating pairing associated with Major Russell.
