Framed Display of Confederate Flag Fragments and Relics.
23.75" x 19.75" deeply recessed antique frame housing a collection of flag fragments, etc. assembled by Charles Herbst, a veteran of the 2nd Kentucky ("Orphan Brigade") who actively collected Confederate memorabilia and often brought items from his collection to reunions of the brigade. He was captured at Fort Donelson and served as "postmaster" at Camp Morton. After the war, he lived in Atlanta and Macon and was very active in reinterring bodies of dead Kentuckians killed in the war back to Kentucky. After his death in 1898, the Herbst scrapbooks were sold to pay funeral expenses. Two of the scrapbooks were retrieved from the trash in 2013 and eventually sold at auction. This display was acquired by J. H. Elliott's Antiques of Atlanta and displayed at their second floor Civil War museum before being purchased by a Florida dealer and resold in 2011.

The display includes: blue fragment from the 4th Kentucky 1864, black fragment from the 39th Georgia Infantry, fragment from the State flag of Kentucky presented "from the Ladies of Scott [County]" in 1862, red & blue fragment from the 9th Georgia Infantry presented by "Misses Hoge of Atlanta, Ga.", red fragment from the 6th Kentucky Infantry 1864, fragment from the Gate City Guards 1861, black piece of crepe from Robert E. Lee's funeral, red fragment from the 8th Georgia Infantry 1861-1862, fragment from the 7th Georgia Infantry [Bartow's Brigade 1st Battle Manassas), fragment from the 3rd Georgia Infantry [a fragment from their battle flag displayed on a vintage photograph of the flag with presentation inscription], fragment from Max Corput's Battery of Atlanta [Georgia Light Artillery], a leaf from the grave of Robert E. Lee and two leaves from the grave of Stonewall Jackson.

Some fading to inked inscriptions, scattered minor chipping to frame and gilt liner. Frame might require some repair or refitting, but could easily be displayed as-is.
