    Description

Foot Artillery Sword with Scarce 1855 Date. The blade of this nice example of the Model 1833 Foot Artillery Sword bears the date 1855 along with the usual "US" and "ADK" inspector markings. The reverse is deeply marked "AMES MFG Co/ CHICOPEE." Records indicate that only 1000 of these impressive weapons were made by Ames that year. The solid brass "fish scale" hilt is in equally fine condition with its deep "eagle" stamping prominent at the pommel. The crossguard has the inspector stampings "ADK" and "RHKW," with "N.J" deeply stamped on the reverse to show purchase by the state of New Jersey. A few numbers, meaning unknown, are also stamped on the crossguard. The blade is free of nicks and the surface shows hints of luster with some minor spots of surface rust. The original full black leather scabbard with brass throat and tip accompany the sword. The throat is missing the "button" that secures the sword to the frog and the leather at the tip is broken and detached. This is a far better than average example of a Foot Artillery Sword with a later, uncommon date of manufacture.
