Folk-art carved pipe done in Libby Prison by George W. Heath, 7th Pa. Reserves. He was captured at Gaines' Mill, Va.
Measuring 2 ¾ inches and was a highlight in the Flayderman Collection of carved pipes, one of two that had been carved in Libby Prison. Its owner, George W. Heath, was a resident of Philadelphia and enlisted on June 4th, 1861, mustering in to Co. K of the 7th Penn. Reserve Corps, also known as the 36th Infantry. Heath was captured on June 27th, 1862 at the Battle of Gaines' Mill, Va. which was part of the Seven Days Battles during the Peninsula Campaign. Gaines' Mill was the first real battle for the Reserves and they sustained heavy loss in killed, wounded, and captured. The pipe is in fine condition and was actually used and not just a keepsake. (In fact, there is still some ash in the bowls.) It maintains a wonderful uncleaned patina. Flayderman's Catalog Number is still on the back side of the pipe. Neatly carved on the pipe:

    "G. W. HEATH
    CO. K 7 PRVC
LIBBY JUNE 27. 1862" From The Calvin Packard Civil War Battlefield Letter Collection.
