    Fine Silver Flask Cover Presented to Gen Wesley Merritt, May 23, 1898. Silver cover once covering a glass flask, marked on the bottom ".999/1000 Fine, Spaulding & Co". Measures 5.75" high. Engraved with rococo designs and open sides, the front with presentation reading "To Gen. Wesley Merritt, from, E.S.I., Ormsby Hill, May 23d 1898, Turn Out The Guard". Wesley Merritt enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 1, 1860, upon his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy, as a 2nd lieutenant rising to the rank of brevet major general March 13, 1865. He served in the Army of the Potomac and was brevetted for gallantry at Gettysburg, Yellow Tavern, Haw's Shop, Winchester and Five Forks. After the war he commanded the Departments of the Missouri, Dakota, and the Department of the East. He was appointed to command the forces in the Philippines in May 1898. He served in the regular army until he retired June 16, 1900.
