Fine Quality, Pristine Condition, Cased Set of French/ Belgian Percussion Target/ Dueling Pistols, Circa 1845. The guns are 16" overall with 9 7/8" octagonal .45 caliber rifled barrels. Patent breech, single screw locks. Barrels retain 100% of the original bright blue. Bolsters, tangs, locks, trigger guard, and butt cap with 100% of the original brilliant case colors, with all of these parts also delicately and elaborately scroll engraved. The figured walnut stocks with fluted grips and deeply relief carved panels on the underside of the forestocks featuring oak leaves. A few minor scratches, else perfect, retaining 98% of the original varnish. The guns are housed in a green wool felt lined French style casing with wooden ramrod, mallet, bullet, and patch boxes along with brass powder measure, screw driver, and oiler that is marked on the bottom "James Dixon/ & Sons/ Sheffield/ 203". Accessories also mint. The set is missing one ramrod, the bullet mould and the lid to one of the two corner compartments. The dovetailed figured oak casing is 10½" x 19" x 3" with shield shaped brass lid escutcheon and lock plate. Overall very good condition with one crack in the lid and another in the base, the case clearly serving its purpose over the years of protecting the guns. A very pretty cased set of European pistols.Auction Info
