    Fine Cased Pair of Inscribed 1851 Colt Navy Pistols, Colonel Charles Dare, 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Serial numbers 98925 and 98930, .36 caliber 6-shot cylinders with naval engagement scene, 7 1/2" octagon barrels with brass pin front sights. Top of each barrel stamped "Address Saml. Colt New York City, left side of frame stamped "Colts Patent". Each backstrap inscribed " Presented to Col Chas P. Dare by his friends connected with the P. W. & B. R. R. C." (Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore Railroad Company) in fine script.
    Pistol number 98925 in fine condition, barrel with 60% blue rest turned to gray, sharp bright bore. Cylinder 70% blue, rest turned to gray. 60% case colors with minor fading. Minor silver wear on the trigger guard but mostly worn off grip straps. Figured walnut grips excellent with 95% varnish. All lettering, numbers and cylinder scene are excellent, mechanically perfect.
    Pistol number 98930 in fine condition, barrel with 90% blue the rest gray, sharp bright bore. Upon close examination we believe that the blue on the cylinder appears to have been touched up, nearly undetectable. Hammer 90% case colors, frame mostly faded to dull gray. Loading lever 20% case colors, remainder gray. Minor silver wear on the edges of the trigger guard, grip straps 20% silver. Figured walnut grips with 95% varnish. Cylinder scene 95%, under magnification, a line of very fine pitting can be seen running across the cylinder at the serial number. All other lettering and numbers are excellent, mechanically perfect.

    Rosewood veneer double case, top with brass shield shaped escutcheon engraved "Col Chas. P. Dare", top exhibits a few areas of veneer lifting and missing main case corners. Original interior green velvet lining exhibits minor wear and soiling. Accessories include embossed stand of arms powder flask, no varnish, shows a few very small dents along the seam, brass double cavity mold stamped "Colts Patent", two tins of Eley Bros percussion caps with green paper labels, two boxes of combustible cartridges by Johnson and Dow, both with tape repairs.
    Colonel Charles P. Dare was mustered into the 23 rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry April 4, 1861 for three months service. At the expiration of the three months service Col Dare did not reenlist for reasons of poor health. Colonel Dare died October 25, 1863. From the Michael Yeck Collection.
