    Fascinating Piece of Civil War Period Confederate Folk Art Calligraphy/Poetry. 10 1/4" X 15 1/2", double sided, on a blank page from a Confederate clothing account book. First poem titled "Lorena" with six neatly written ink script verse. "Lorena" was originally composed by the Rev. H. D. L. Webster, lamenting the loss of his first love, a 19 year old girl who sang in the church choir. Originally titled Ella the title was changed to Lorena when it was set to music and published as a song C. 1859. It became popular with both Confederate soldiers and civilians during the Civil War. The second poem/song titled "Paul Pane or Lorena'a Reply" with four verses. The third song, on the verso is titled "Under the Trees" and is "Composed and dedicated to Mifs.....(My Girl)." It is accompanied by "Air to song and chorus" with musical notes written with their alphabetic equivalents. The fourth poem, of 3 verses, titled "I Will Think of Thee Forever." All the song titles are executed in elaborate 5/8" high ink calligraphy letters. Beautifully done, and a rare example of Confederate folk art from the period of the war. Additionally on the verso at the bottom, also executed in elaborate is "Fergiss - mein nicht". overall excellent bright crisp condition, just some water staining along the bottom edge and separated at the folds but 100% complete and in very neat legible script. Most unusual and the first example of this popular mid 19th century folk art form we've seen with Confederate association. This lot requires 3rd party shipping.
