Extremely Rare Regulation Confederate Naval Officer's Visored Cap. With only a handful of existing specimens, this specimen bearing verbal provenance to Lt. John Low of the CSS Alabama, and formatted for the rank of Master. Low was commissioned Master in the fledgling Confederate Navy on November 15, 1861, and subsequently promoted to lieutenant. Low served aboard the CSS Florida, Alabama, and Tuscaloosa, which he commanded upon the recommendation of Raphael Semmes, June 21, 1863, as a result of his exemplary service aboard the Alabama.

The hat is in superb condition and regulation in every detail. Gray wool body with separately affixed 1" wide gold bullion tape band, set between two narrow raised welts, around the base. Tarred leather visor with a 3/16" wide oil cloth binding. Tarred leather chinstrap with two adjusting loops and the original very rare cuff size regulation Confederate naval officer's side buttons, the backmarks inaccessible. The original gray wool backed insignia incorporates a tightly woven silver bullion fouled anchor inside a bullion wreath. 1 7/16" black oil cloth sweat band, split at the back. Brown cotton lining, the top hand stitched in concentric circles with light padding, shows honest wear and use but intact and very sound. The hat overall is in near perfect untouched condition, just a few mothed spots at the back along the bottom edge detracting little. The underside of the sweatband bears the initials CAF, possibly a previous owner as this hat was accompanied by Low's Confederate Navy sword belt and uniform coat when it originally surfaced and was on display in the Museum of the Confederacy for a number of years. A rare opportunity to acquire an exceptional example of one of the rarest of all forms of Civil War regulation Confederate headgear.
