    Description

Extremely Rare, Possibly Unique, Variant of the Carte-de-Visite View of the Confederate Dead Outside Battery Robinette. Although the body of Col. Rogers remains the prominent figure in the foreground, the positioning of his vest is clearly different. Clearly a slightly different image than the view normally (although still very rarely) encountered, and likely taken subsequent to that view. The positioning of the Confederate dead is clearly different, with apparently some of the bodies having been moved and, in a couple of cases entirely removed. The blanket lean to in the background is also positioned differently, along with several other small but obvious differences. The horseman normally visible at the right is absent, and several men, one seated and two on horseback are visible at the left. Appear to be civilians and were likely part of the burial detail, explaining the different positioning of the bodies. Light even fading with a few white spots, obviously the result of the original processing but overall excellent. Remarkably the image bears a backmark of "Cadwallader & Tappen / Photographers / Front Street / Marietta, O." A heretofore missing piece in the photographic record of this horrible carnage.
