Extremely Rare, Exceptional Condition, Inspected and Maker-Marked Pair of Civil War Enlisted Man's Mounted Trousers. Seldom ever available to collectors, this pair of U.S. regulation mounted service trousers will be almost impossible to surpass for condition and desirability. Made of sky blue kersey, the garment shows only the lightest period wear. Almost all seams are strong and intact with some more recent stitching added to reinforce a few scattered weak points. There is no mothing. The trousers are sound throughout and retain the distinctive reinforcement panel , also in exceptional condition and firmly affixed. A pocket is in each of the side seams and a small watch pocket in the waistband, all of which retain their full white canvas lining. All four tin buttons remain on the fly and four of the original six suspender buttons are on the waistband. Only the small adjustment string is missing from the vented back. Inside one cuff remains three of the four buttons designed to hold a strap that passes under the boot. One button is retained inside the other cuff. The lightweight canvas lining inside the waistband is in excellent condition with a black rectangular inspectors' stamp clearly visible along with a partially obscured maker's stamp that appears to indicate manufacture by the New York City firm of Conant and Bolles which had contracts for 24,000 pair of mounted trousers in 1862-63. A wonderfully preserved example of an extremely desirable uniform item that saw actual service in the war.
