Exquisite Civil War Period Patriotic Watercolor. 6 3/4" X 9 1/2" overall. This is the original painting for the title page of the 1864 edition of "The Ladie's Repository", title done in red and blue ink. The lower portion of the page includes publisher's information "Cincinnati / POE & HITCHCOCK and "New York / CARLTON & PORTER. Both in red and blue ink in decorative ribands. In the center is a 3" X 4 1/2" panel with an absolutely exquisite watercolor. Depicts standing Lady Liberty with shield and waving American flag with tattered fly. In the background are burning cities and marching troops,. In the foreground is the detritus of battle, with artillery shells, cannon barrel, swords etc. with a mother holding a baby apparently tending her wounded husband. Red and yellow shield shaped device at top "1864" and another smaller red and yellow device at the bottom "STILL WAVING". At the left in red ink is a coiled serpent and at the right is a sword, musket, knapsack. Pristine condition and a really wonderful painting.
