    Exceptional Group of Civil War Period Medical Instruments. Group includes: Large heavy brass mounted wooden pill making apparatus, marked S. Maw Son & Thompson London. The base 8" X 13" X 1" thick. The roller with wooden handles 19" wide and adjustable double sided brass pressure plate. One replaced screw else about perfect condition; a dram graduated bottle with spout marked Mayer & Meltzer London in original leather case, perfect; Medicine glass in brown leather case. Case with some flaking, bottom missing, glass perfect; maroon leather case with an etched graduated medicine glass in the bottom and a tiny etched graduated cylinder in the lid, perfect; collapsible silver plated cup in leatherette case; a pair of artificial glass eyes; small brass apothecary scale in silk lined tin case, complete and excellent; small blue medicine glass, perfect; wooden handled mixing spatula/pill counter perfect; what is apparently a bone mixing spatula, excellent with nice patina; an unidentified wooden press; 3 1/2" high 2" diameter Civil War period tin with cork and "Ether" label, we believe the label to be a recent addition; a porcelain pill counting/mixing tray, 7" X 9" X 1/2" thick, excellent condition: and an exceptional brass mounted mahogany apothecary chest. 6 3/4" square X 7 1/4" high. Recessed brass handles on lid and the 2" high drawer at the bottom. Full of 19th century pharmaceutical bottles, many with glass stoppers. The drawer contains tin compartments full of pills along with a myriad of full, period, cardboard pill boxes and paper wrapped medications, along with a white porcelain salve container. Case with nice rich patina, a few minor age cracks with no loss and excellent. Original maroon velvet lining excellent. A very nice example of this basic piece of medical equipment as accompanied most Civil War surgeons into the field. Very nice grouping containing a number of scarce pieces.
