    Ellsworth Zouaves: Gold Shooting Competition Medal. Intriguing presentation fob in the shape of a star. The front has a silver tiger head superimposed on a shield. It is inscribed "Zouave G. G. Semper Paratus". The back is inscribed: "1st Prize Presented by E. L. Brand to Ellsworth Zouaves June 17th 1868 Won by W. F. Hunt". The star measures 1.25" x 1.25" and hangs from a long chain with loop and bar attachments along with small brooch inscribed "Ellsworth". We haven't tested the chain, but all other components are gold. Reverse is marked: E.L.Brand was a Private in the Chicago Zouaves aka 19th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. They were organized into four separate companies on May 4, 1861 in Chicago. It was consolidated and mustered into Federal service as the 19th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on June 17, 1861. It was mustered out at Chicago on July 9, 1864. They served at Chattanooga, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and Atlanta. The date on this medal is exactly 7 years after their muster in date.
