Edmund Kirby Smith Partly Printed Document Signed, Naming John J. Dix an Agent of the Subsistence Department of the Confederate Army. One page, 8.25" x 11", on pale blue, "Head Quarters Trans-Mississippi Department, Shreveport, La" letterhead, March 18, 1865. In part: "You are hereby appointed an Agent of the Subsistence Department with the Pay and Allowances of Captain of Infantry in the Provisional Army, in the service of the Confederate States, to date as such from the first of March, One Thousand Eighth Hundred and Sixty five... Should you accept, you will report to Colonel J.S. Ford, Comnd'g forces for duty at Brownsville Texas." Large, bold signature "E. Kirby Smith". This was probably one of the last promotions General Smith signed prior to surrendering his department - the only significant Confederate army left at the time - a short two months later. Very good condition with minor dampstain and wear. Bold holograph entries throughout. Small areas of paper loss and a few wormholes along right edge affect only one word of text.
