Early Post Civil War Confederate 1st National Pattern Flag with Fonda Thomsen Analysis Report. The flag is 27" on the hoist and 46 3/4" on the fly, constructed entirely of cotton fabric with 13 gold bullion stars attached to each side of the canton and 1 3/4" gold bullion fringe around the perimeter of three sides. The 18 1/2" X 17 1/2" blue canton has twelve stars 2" tip to tip forming a 14" diameter circle, with one star 2 1/4" tip to tip in the center. The hoist is of 1 3/8" tan cotton fabric, hand and machine stitched, with three pairs of 9" long, 3/8" wide, red (now faded to pink) cotton ties for suspension. Although the flag exhibits some fading testifying to its age and use, it is overall in excellent sound condition and is intact as originally constructed with no alterations or additions. A number of the stars have some loss of sequins, revealing the white cotton padding underneath. The ties and bullion fringe are attached with hand stitching, but most of the flag is machine stitched using a lockstitch machine. Although such machines were available during the Civil War, the uniform tension suggests a post war period of construction. A very attractive flag and certainly of the first generation of post war flags produced.
