David Hunter: Extensive Manuscript Report and ALS. February 17, 1868 ALS from David Hunter to George W. Reed of New York. "I find among my papers, part of a Report from my Chief of Staff, Gen. David H. Strother (Poste Crayon). This will give you our numbers at Piedmont, and if of any service, you are welcome to it." The lot includes the aforementioned report. It is sixteen pages written on front leaves only of bifolium stationery, Richmond, Virginia, August 1, 1865. There are eight bi-fold sheets. The reports cover the period from May 15, 1864 to June 17, 1864 and are disbound. The report deals with Department of West Virginia forces who were part of an overarching plan of attack that included General Grant in the East and General Sherman in the South. They were charged with "the most important secondary purposes of the campaign, that of falling upon the enemy's communications, destroying rail roads, military depots, stores and supplies - of crippling his resources in every way practical, of distracting his attention and if possible inducing him to detach portions of his force from the main points of operation." Though incomplete, a wonderful, highly-detailed resource of this aspect of the war in 1864.
