    Description

Confederate General Harry Hays Carte de Visite Signed "Harry T. Hays". 2.5" x 4", New Orleans; no date. A bust portrait of Brigadier General Harry T. Hays, seen wearing his Confederate uniform. Backstamped Anderson & Turner, New Orleans. Signed in ink on verso, along with a blue 2-cent stamp.

Harry T. Hays (1820-1876), the brother of famous Texas Ranger John Coffee Hays, was a veteran of the Mexican War who practiced law before the war. Hays joined the Confederate Army as colonel of the 7th Louisiana Infantry in 1861. Hays participated in the First Battle of Manassas and was wounded at Port Republic. He recovered and was promoted to brigadier general, assuming command of the 1st Louisiana Brigade, the "Louisiana Tigers." He led the brigade at the Battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg. He was captured at Rappahannock Station, but was able to make an escape. He was severely wounded at Spotsylvania Court House and was thereafter transferred to the Trans-Mississippi. His promotion to major general occurred in the last days of the war and was never approved by the Confederate government. After the war, he served a year as sheriff of Orleans Parish, Louisiana, but was removed from office by Gen. Phil Sheridan.

Condition: Light toning and foxing, with a small amount of wear at the lower left corner. There is a spot of soiling at the lower part of the portrait. Small holes at the top left corner. Else very good.
