Description
Confederate Flag: Two Swatches Given to Major Arthur Lee Rogers, the Designer of the Last Confederate Flag, in Framed Display with Letter of Provenance from His Daughter. Two 3.5" x 1" (approximate) cloth strips, one blue and one red, pinned to a one page letter written and signed by Laura Lee Rogers at Plainfield [New Jersey], dated January 26, 1908. It reads, in full: "This is a piece of the first Confederate flag made in Loudoun Co. Virginia, and was presented by the ladies of Leesburgh to my father Maj. Arthur Lee Rogers Cap of the Loudoun Artillery. While disabled for active service from a wound received at the battle of Chancellorsville he designed the last Confederate flag." The second Confederate flag had a field of solid white. Rogers argued that it could be mistaken as a flag of truce and he changed the proportions and added a red vertical stripe at far right with "as little as possible of the Yankee blue." His design was adopted on March 4, 1865. In the original mat and framed to an overall 11" x 15.5". An historical piece. Toned letter, mat lightly dampstained at bottom, overall fine.Auction Info

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
