Confederate Battleflag Captured at the Battle of Mine Creek, Kansas, October 24, 1864, Accompanied by Fonda Thomsen Analysis Report. As a preliminary summary of Ms. Thomsen's report she states the following: "This flag is a textbook example of the Army of the Tennessee pattern......the materials in and construction of this flag are consistent with flags of this pattern manufactured at the Atlanta Depot in 1864-65 and issued during the Civil War. The results compare favorably with the reported history......The materials and method of construction match those of the documented flags of the 13th Louisiana Inf., the 4th Louisiana Battalion, the 46th Georgia Infantry and Barret's 10th Missouri Infantry among others. These flags were carefully and expertly crafted by skilled workers. The condition of the flag suggests a period of use possibly in an engagement as suggested. The staining and soiling appear to be from the source suggested"The flag is accompanied by a 1990 document bearing the following history: "This hand sewn flag was captured in the historic Civil War Battle of Mine Creek, the only officially recognized Civil War engagement fought on Kansas soil in Linn County on October 24, 1864. The flag was donated to our firm in 1980 by a client, the great grandson of the Union soldier who slew the rebel soldier carrying the flag into battle. We had the flag encased in glass for preservation. The donor's great grandfather wiped his gun barrel with the flag after killing the Confederate, the black grease being readily visible. The Rebel's blood and bullet holes are also evident, which constitutes a chilling testament to this tragic war between brothers".
The flag is 35" on the hoist and 51" on the fly, constructed of one layer of fabric. The fly consists of four red wool quadrants with a 6" wide blue wool cross inserted diagonally through the field. A 1 7/8" white cotton border is inserted along each side of the cross arms. Appliqued to the center of the cross arms, on each side of the flag, are 13, 3 1/2" point to point, white cotton stars, arranged with 3 stars in each arm and one star in the center. The hoist consists of a simple 3/4" turned hem, with 3 (originally 4) pairs of pink (originally red wool) ties evenly spaced down the edge.
The flag is hand sewn throughout and intact as originally constructed, except for the missing bottom tie, with no alterations or additions, with the wool fabrics in relatively strong condition, showing little deterioration from exposure to light. While the flag is overall in excellent sound condition the specific points related to condition are as follows: some minor damage from insects but the majority of the damage appears to be from use; the leading edge quadrant has a series of small (less than 1") holes down the outer edge; the bottom quadrant has a hole just under the peak and some damage to the bottom edge; the fly quadrant has two 1" to 1 1/2' holes along the fly end; the blue cross has minor damage in each arm but the lower leading edge arm is missing 1 1/2" of fabric from the end. This is also where the tie is missing. That same arm has a 3" - 4" tear between the two upper stars. There are 3 holes around the center star and the next star up the top fly end arm has a 2" X 4" hole over it; the fly is stained with dark deposits along the top quadrant and the bottom edge of the fly quadrant. There are numerous additional stains in the white cotton fabric of the border and stars.
A complete copy of Ms. Thomsen's report can be sent to seriously interested parties. A great Confederate battleflag with superb documentation.
