    Description

Colt 1851 .36 Cal. Percussion Navy Revolver #120424 Mfg. 1862 with Fascinating History. All metal smooth and clean, very nice, with deep crisp markings overall and all matching, wedge un-numbered. 95% cylinder scene, action tight and crisp, excellent bore. The front sight is a period replacement, else complete and original in every respect. Grips also excellent just showing some smooth honest wear with three notches neatly cut on the right side. Scratched into the bottom grip strap is the letter "M" or "W", obviously period. Accompanied by the original brown leather open end flap holster. Missing the belt loop and tab for the narrow flap, else very fine with pin prick decoration on the front. Leather nice and supple with no flaking and embossed line on the edge of the flap. The gun is accompanied by a notarized letter dated 1999 stating the gun was given to the current owner by Charles Von Weise (1874 - 1945) an attorney in Ardmore, Oklahoma, in 1940, who had been given the gun by his uncle. The attorney's uncle acquired the gun when he was manager of a gold property near Salt Lake City, Utah, C. 1867. A number of the gold shipments to San Francisco had been lost to stagecoach bandits. On one particular shipment the stagecoach was heavily armed, and when the attempted holdup occurred the bandit leader was shot and killed, and his gun and holster presented to Van Weise's uncle. A fascinating history and an exceptionally crisp Navy with scarce original holster.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
