    Description

Colonel Elmer Ellsworth-Related Souvenirs (Two) in Period Frames Including a Button Worn by Him. Ellsworth, a well-respected leader, was the first Union officer killed in the Civil War. On May 24, 1861, he climbed the stairs to the top of the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria, Virginia, to remove the rebel flag flying there. Coming back down he was killed by the homeowner James W. Jackson who was then immediately killed by Corporal Francis Brownell. Offered here are two excellent pieces for display.
    (1) The first item is a double-sided 1" round Ferro in a frame hanging on a ribbon pinned to a period engraving of the scene titled "Remember Ellsworth". On one side is an image of the colonel titled "Ellsworth The Martyr"; the other side bears an image of the corporal titled "Brownell The Avenger". Quite nice, in a crude period frame of 4.75" x 4.25".
    (2) Also, a 16mm brass button with a flag, "Union" above and stars around. It is attached to a period ink note reading: "This Button was/ on Col. Ellsworth's/ Vest 1861". In a vintage frame of 5.75" x 4.75", note toned and soiled but button very fine.
