Cole Younger: An Unpublished Manuscript Describing an Encounter with Younger While He Was With Quantrill's Raiders, Together with Quantrill Photos. Written by Federal Captain Charles A. Perry, who during the War was serving with the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry Volunteers. Titled: "Challenge and Defiance: Was Cole Younger Capt. Tough's Adversary?", he describes in detail an encounter between Kansas and Missouri with a column of Confederate soldiers being escorted by irregulars whom he believed to be led by Cole Younger. A full typed transcription of the 5 ½ page manuscript is included, although the handwriting is clearly legible. Whether Perry's force was opposed by Younger is unclear, but the manuscript is at the least a colorful account of a Civil War encounter on the western Plains, and makes great reading. It is being sold with a heavily retouched Anthony/Brady CDV of William Clarke Quantrill (identification panel affixed to bottom), a Civil War-era CDV of a shifty-looking man identified on verso as "Uncle Quantrell Kansas & Mo. Terr." and a 4" x 5 1/2" mounted silver print likewise identified on verso as William Quantrill. It is quite similar to an image of Quantrill published in an accompanying newspaper article from the 1920s.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
