Classic Confederate Enlisted Man's Reclaimed Jean Cloth Kepi in Remarkable Condition. Perhaps nothing evokes the image of the Southern fighting man more than this cadet gray chasseur cap, which demonstrates how the South reused scarce resources to uniform and equip the Confederate Army. Faintly visible on the crown and body of this cap is the black outline of what appears to be a floral design, indicating that the cloth was made for some decorative purpose before being salvaged and re-dyed deep gray for the manufacture of uniforms. The cap is made of jean cloth and shows only slight wear with just a few almost unnoticeable moth holes. The original leather visor, 1.75 inches deep in front, has a narrow tarred canvas binding and is firmly attached. The original narrow chinstrap remains affixed by its two small brass, tin-backed buttons bearing matching geometric/ floral patterns. The kepi rises a full 3 inches in the front. Inside, the cap's white cotton lining shows period wear and stains but aside from a few negligible tears is complete and sound, as is the 1.25 inch wide brown leather sweatband. This is a wonderfully preserved and rare example of what the common Confederate soldier wore, made even more interesting by the use of salvaged material. A real gem with great eye appeal for the serious collector.
