Civl War .50 caliber Gallager Percussion Breech Loading Carbine Metal generally smooth and dark gray to brown with some areas of old surface rust that would clean nicely with just a few tiny patches of light pitting. Excellent markings including #5633 on lock, mechanism fine, although the hammer has been removed and the nipple closed, both of which will, of course, have to be replaced. Bore with old coat of surface but should scour out to excellent. Patchbox still carries the extra nipple. The saddle ring bar is slight bent, again easily straightened with the original ring in place. Complete, original and untouched in every respect with the exception, of course, of the missing hammer. Wood excellent with just some dents on the cheek side of the wrist, overall a dark rich patina. Actually overall a very nice early Gallager just in need of a good hand cleaning.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
