    Description

Civil War US M1860 Light Cavalry Saber Named To A Member Of The 2nd Pennsylvania Cavalry. The hilt is scratched with the name "Dallas Troupe", William D. Troupe (Trup in records), who served with the 2nd Pa. Cav. from 08/28/63 to 6/17/65 at which time he became part of the 1st Penna. Provisional Cavalry, finally mustering out 7/13/65. The saber is made by "Mansfield & Lamb / Forestdale", markings on reverse ricasso, and marked on the obverse ricasso "US / J. M. / 1864". Blade in superb condition with just some minor staining, no rust, pitting or nicks with scattered luster. Retains the original leather washer. Hilt with a very slight bend to the outboard branch, barely noticeable, with dark untouched patina overall. Leather and brass wire wrapped grip with a few scattered flakes, else about perfect. The scabbard is also excellent with just one tiny, negligible dent, and dark smooth patina with just some light scattered surface rust. Oddly the scabbard is missing the lower ring mount, although it is clear on the scabbard where it was originally mounted. Obviously gone for a long time as where it was mounted has patina nearly matching the rest of the scabbard. The sword was consigned by a direct lineal descendant of Troupe and is accompanied by the period "Military Register" of Co. F 2nd Penna. Cav. with Troupe's name listed as a private. 18 1/2" by 23 1/2" published by Geo. M. Lanckton of Washington, D. C. Fine condition with just one small tear, with no loss, near the bottom and mounted in late 19th century frame. Nice set with the 2nd Penna. Cav. being heavily engaged throughout the war. Accompanied by a set of records, Troupe was from Chester, Pa.
