Civil War US M1850 Foot Officer's Sword Inscribed to Lt. Charles L. Roberts, 55th Massachusetts Infantry (Colored). Roberts enlisted in the 35th Mass. Inf. on 8/7/62 and was transferred to the VRC on 7/1/63. He was subsequently promoted as 2nd Lieutenant in Co. F, 55th Mass. Inf. on 12/5/64 and mustered out 8/29/65. Sword manufactured by C. Roby & Co. and inscribed in period script on the lower portion of the top scabbard mount "C. L. Roberts / 55 Mass. Vols.". Very nicely etched blade generally smooth and clean with the obverse exhibiting extensive floral/scroll etching with flag panoplies and flying eagle surmounting American shield. The reverse with similar floral/scroll decoration along with American flag panoply, large US and motto Union Forever 1863. Maker's logo "C. Roby & Co. / W. Chelmsford / Mass" just above the ricasso. Blade very nice with just some minor pitting at the base of the ricasso. Regulation style hilt excellent with nice patina. Sharkskin grip just shows some minor wear and retains all of the the twisted brass wire wrap. Steel scabbard with brass mounts excellent with nice dark patina and just a few tiny patches of light pitting. Number of small dents on the lower mount near the drag with the drag actually worn through from use at the bottom. Apparently Lt. Roberts was rather short of stature. Very nice sword identified to a very desirable unit.
