    Description

Civil War Union Officer's Frock Coat, Trousers White Vest, Sword Belt, Sash, Gauntlets, and Cartes de Visite Identified to Captain Frederick Sears Grand d' Hauteville. It is a rare occasion that we have the pleasure to offer at auction a uniform in such fine condition. Superb examples like this rarely come to market. This lot and the next two lots are the uniforms worn by Captain d' Hauteville during the Civil War. They appear as if they were packed away just yesterday. This lot includes: 1.) d' Hauteville's officer's frock coat of fine quality dark blue wool. Good sleeve cut, nine-button front, three buttons on each cuff, all buttons marked "Horstmann Brothers & Co. Phil.". Japanned hooks and eyelets at the waist between the second and third lower buttons. 1 ¼-inch high standup collar with blue velvet lining. Black silk body lining with quilted chest. White cotton sleeve lining. Breast pockets lined with brown polished cotton as are the tail pockets. Raw cut bottom edge. 1 ½-wide single-border bullion Captain's shoulder straps with velvet background. Shoulder straps are affixed to coat via tie strings. D' Hauteville's handwritten ownership marking in ink, on the reverse side of the cloth hanging loop on the neck. 2.) Uniform trousers of fine blue wool with six-button fly front. Each black metal button is marked "Cullin". Single, thin bullion stripe running down the exterior of each leg. Six black metal suspender buttons also marked Cullin. Adjustment buckle and strap on the outside rear waist. Two large pockets and one small watch pocket. Cotton lining. The watch pocket is ownership marked in ink: "Capt. D' Hauteville / Nov. 15th 62". 3.) Officer's white vest with fine wool front and belted cotton back. Five button front, all buttons marked "D. Evans & Co. Extra." and held fast by brass rings. Wide flat collar, 3-inches at its widest. Two open waist pockets. 4.) Black leather sword belt and leather hangers. Leather measures 33-inches overall, the hangers 20 and 11-inches respectively. Pattern 1851 waist belt plate. Both plate and keeper are benchmarked "584". 5.) Silk officer's sash measuring approximately 97-inches overall, including the 8-inch tassels on either end. 6.) Fine doeskin gauntlets with split cuffs. 7.) Three CDVs, one of d' Hauteville posed standing in his frock coat (perhaps the same one as in this lot) and sword. With a Whipple, Boston studio imprint on the verso. The other two are of d' Hauteville in civilian clothes; the other, Elizabeth Stuyvesant Fish d' Hauteville, his wife, with Disderie & Cie, Paris and Brady studio imprints respectively. Elizabeth was the daughter of the renowned statesman Hamilton Fish.

Condition: 1.) Excellent. Showing only modest storage wear and with a very few trivial moth nips. Lining with a few small holes and tears. 2.) Excellent. With a small 1 ½-inch split on the seat, a few trivial moth holes, and modest storage wear. 3.) Very good. Some discoloration and staining from storage. 4.) Good. This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
