Description

Civil War: Two Army and One Navy City of Brooklyn Service Medals, 1866.

Three medals identical in form: bronze with 33 x 47-mm planchets, suspended by red/white/blue silk ribbons. The obverse is marked: "PRESENTED BY THE CITY OF BROOKLYN TO ONE OF ITS VETERANS"; the reverse with the City of Brooklyn seal. Two examples feature plain pendants, though one is marked Tiffany; the other has a sterling anchor pendant presumably denoting naval service. The medal was proposed in late 1865 by Brookly mayor and former soldier himself, Alfred M. Woods. It is certainly one of the earliest medals of its kind. Approximately 6,000 were produced.

Condition: Some modest fraying to the ribbon of one example, otherwise all are in very good condition. Nicolas D. Wood Collection
