Civil War Sword Presented to Timothy L. Shanley 69th NYSV Irish Brigade. Died from Wounds Received at Antietam All metal elements of this sword have been heavily cleaned and restored. 32" blade etched for half its length with scrolls and panoplies of arms. Blade has been nickel plated. Pierced basket hilt centered with standing eagle / shield over stands of flags with seven stars in riband above. Pommel heavily cast with classical motifs, pommel cap missing. Fishskin grip with twisted wire wrap excellent. Hilt has been gold plated. Scabbard body has been nickel plated and shows one shallow dent. Gold plated fittings decorated with classical shell and scroll motifs. Top mount engraved "Presented to Capt. T. L Shanley 69th Regt N.Y.S.V. Irish Brigade by his friends the Coopers of N.Y. City, New York, Aug 5th 1862".
Timothy L. Shanely resident of New York City was authorized to raise a company for the 69th New York October 13,1861, appointed Captain Company D November 1,1861, wounded at Malvern Hill 7/1/1862 and again at Antietam September 17,1862. Died in hospital at Frederick Md October 1, 1862.
