    Description

Civil War Scrimshaw Carved Powder Horn Identified to Civil War POW Carl Rieger. Approximately 12.25" in length (curved) and 2.5" in diameter. Etched: "Carl Reiger/Prisoner of War. Tyler. Texas / Captured at Pleasant Hill, La./ April 9th, 1864." Finely etched with an open-winged American eagle over a shield, Lady Liberty, an American man-of-war vessel, a rose, a drum and rifles, and decorative star motifs. Wooden base with high relief petal design. Ring carved at spout. A truly unique and beautiful piece of Civil War history.

Carl Reiger enlisted in the Union Army when he was 21 and was mustered into Co. E, 174th New York Infantry. At the Battle of Pleasant Hill (April 9, 1864), Reiger was captured along with 49 other members of his unit. It is likely that he was held at Camp Ford in Tyler, Texas. On May 27, 1865, he was released and was discharged on July 8, 1865 in New York.

Condition: Light wear, a small nick near the top of the spout. Overall in very good condition.
