    Civil War Presentation Sword of General Joseph Carr 30 1/2 double edge blade with central fuller etched with scrolls , crossed flags and American Eagle. Blade is gray/bright with minor areas of dark staining. Cruciform cross guard in form of a 6" spread wing eagle over shield, reverse engraved "To Gen Joseph B. Carr From his Friends Sept 7, 62". Replaced chain. Knights head pommel with fully sculptured eagle on top. Sharkskin grip and triple wire wrap excellent. Scabbard mounts are decorated in raised relief with top two mounts having identical panoply of arms. Drag decorated with classical foliate and shell design. Ring mounts with a most unusual feature of human hands holding the hanging rings. Scabbard is excellent showing traces of original gilt. Brig. Gen. Carr entered the service May 1861 as Col of the 2nd NY Volunteers. He command the unit at early engagements of the war including Bethel and Fair Oaks. Carr served in the Army of Potomac throughout the Peninsula Campaign and Seven Days Battles as well as the Northern Virginia Campaign As a brigade commander in the 3rd Corps General Carr participated in the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville where he commanded a division. Carr was wounded at the peach Orchard at Gettysburg, and at the wars end brevetted Major General.
