Civil War Period Thirty-four Star United States Flag. Hoist measures approximately 65½"; fly measures approximately 88", the canton measures approximately 41" x 31½", and the stars measure about 5½" across. Three (of four) hand-whipped grommets appear on the hoist end and several of the original halyard strings remain with the flag. There are no maker's marks present. This example is double-sided, constructed of light-weight wool bunting. The flag displays an interesting anomaly in that the outside bunting is tapered to the fly end, either as originally constructed or trimmed at some point as a result of damage. There are several holes from wear on the bunting and the flag has been sewn to a modern cotton backing to stabilize the damage and preserve the flag until a more appropriate and permanent display solution can be devised. The thirty-four star flag became the official U.S. flag on July 4, 1861 with the addition of Kansas to the Union. The flag lasted for two years until the admission of West Virginia to the Union in 1863. This would be a perfect example to display any Civil War collector's "war room".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
