Civil War Period Confederate Enlisted Man's Kepi. Butternut wool body, likely faded from gray, excellent just showing some honest wear and a few small scattered moth holes. Stands 3 1/4" high at the front. Period eagle side buttons with 1/2" wide tarred leather chinstrap with round faced brass adjusting buckle. Bound tarred leather visor. Both visor and chinstrap excellent. Brown polished cotton lining with tarred leather crown stiffener which exhibits a small period ink script label with the name either L. P. or S. P. Hall or Hill. There are a number of names in the database which would fit any of these names but sadly we have no additional provenance to precisely establish the name of the owner of the kepi. The sweat band is missing although all of the polished brown cotton lining is intact including that behind the sweat band. A most unusual detail on this kepi is the use of uniform quality blue wool at the front underside of the body where the visor was affixed (now partially loose), likely demonstrating the Confederate use of salvaged Union material when practical. A very nice, untouched, Confederate kepi with a great 'look' and exhibiting an interesting anomaly.
