Civil War Pattern of 1861 .58 Caliber Federal Cartridge Box and Shoulder Belt. A beautiful example as manufactured by J. B. Thaxter of Portland, Maine, to service a government contract in July, 1862. A superb example retaining the original tins and all straps, buckles and flaps. The initials "J M" are stenciled in black on the underside of the front flap. A 3 ¼ x 2-inch brass "US" cartridge box plate is affixed to the outer flap via a leather thong through the mounting eyelets. The shoulder belt is maker marked "F. Chillingworth Maker Greenfield, Mass." An eagle belt plate, 2 ½-inches in diameter, is affixed to the strap with two leather thongs through the eyelets on the reverse side.

Condition: Very good. All leather is supple and sound with little sign of much use. A fine example that will display nicely.
