    Description

Civil War Original Painting by Frank H. Schell from the Century Collection. The black and white watercolor painting pictures a late night meeting between two Union generals and their staff officers. The generals, perusing a map, are dramatically illuminated by a lamp in the center of the table. The painting, on board, is 11" x 8.5" and is signed "Frank H. Schell" in the lower right corner. Schell was a staff artist for the Century Magazine and traveled with the Union Army during the war. He provided the magazine and its readers with firsthand images of battles and as in this case, councils of war. The two lower edges are bumped and there is mounting residue on the verso, else fine.
