Civil War Original Birney's Zouaves Recruiting Broadside "RECRUITS WANTED!", Circa 1861. Approximately 12 x 16-inches. This call for volunteers dates from about September 8, 1861, when the 23rd Pennsylvania was expanded from three companies to 15. Twelve of these companies, including Company G were recruited in Philadelphia. David Bell Birney (1825-1864) was a Philadelphia lawyer when he enlisted on April 21, 1861. Birney enlisted as a Lt. Colonel, and mainly at his own expense raised the 23rd Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Captain John Maxwell enlisted on August 2, 1861 and was commissioned into G Company of the 23rd, serving until he was discharged in 1863. Lt. Alfred Moylan mustered into the regiment on July 24, 1861. The regiment was involved in many important engagements during the war including Seven Pines, Chantilly, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor and Petersburg.

Condition: Excellent. The broadside is bright and bears traces of professional archival restoration.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
