Civil War or Earlier Navy Enlisted Man's Straw hat or "Sennit" with the Original Oil Cloth Rain Cover. As seen in many Civil War period Naval photographs, provisions for wearing these hats were actually provided for in period Navy regulations, both North and South, with the unusually large size and height of this example indicating it may actually be pre war. 14 1/2" diameter brim, the crown 4 3/4" high and 7" in diameter. The portion of the rain cover on the crown can be readily removed, while the portion covering the brim is tacked in place underneath the interior lining. The interior lining is of green polished cotton and there are the remains of a black silk chinstrap. Superb sound condition. The crown portion of the cover has one small crack, else the hat is overall about perfect, just showing some signs of honest wear and use on the interior lining. An exceedingly rare piece of US Naval headgear and the only example we've seen with the original foul weather cover.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
