    Description

Civil War Officer's McClellan Saddle and Accouterments Owned by Captain Frederick G. Hentig, Chief of Commissary of Subsistence of Volunteers. Frederick G. Hentig, born in Michigan, enlisted on Nov. 7, 1862 when he was commissioned into the US Volunteers Commissary Department. Hentig was promoted to Major on Aug. 17, 1865 and mustered out on 22 August 1865.

The saddle is similar to the enlisted man's M1859 McClellan with original rawhide covered seat, which is nearly completely covered by a smooth leather seat that is affixed by small iron tacks. The pommel and cantle are brass bound. The brass shield is script engraved "Capt. F. G. Hentig". The seat cover may have been added after the saddle was manufactured but definitely period. The leather skirts are attached with brass screws. The original long leather fenders show some age crackling and wear from use but sound. The original leather covered wood stirrups are attached, along with the crupper. The girth strap is torn and missing. An unusual martingale is attached to the saddle and uses an eagle breast plate from a cartridge box sling, which is mounted in the center of a leather heart shaped device. Also included with the saddle is the leather girth strap, a set of pistol holsters with cover, one latch tab torn and some restitching on one flap, a leather saddle valise and a well worn but good sound set of regulation pattern 1859 saddle bags. A wonderful set of Id'd Civil war horse gear.
