Civil War Navy EM Uniform, Jumper and Trousers. Constructed of fine quality blue wool. All hand stitched including hand whipped buttonholes, and grommets. Jumper with straight cut body with rounded corners on the bottom with 3 1/2" slits on each side with hand whipped grommets to permit the use of drawstring for tightening, closure. Two 3/16" white cotton stripes on the bib and single stripe on each cuff. Single breast pocket with decorative hand whipped 'darts' at each corner. Cuffs with 6" slit and two button closure. Fabric gathered/pleated where the cuffs attach and there is one wooden and one gutta percha button on each cuff. Oddly there is an old hand stitched repair to a straight tear, with no loss, across the front of the blouse. Detracts little and barely noticeable. Else the jumper is in very fine condition with just a few minor mothholes. Trousers with 11" wide bib front with five buttonholes along the top. Also four vertical buttonholes at waist. Retains all of the original four hole stained wooden buttons. Lined inside the waist area with lighter blue polished cotton. Four hand whipped grommets on each side of the slit in the back, with the original black cotton drawstring for tightening. Overall excellent condition. Just some repair to the crotch seam and interestingly a piece of blue wool added to the seat, apparently to accommodate the expanding size of the sailor. Legs flare slightly from 8 1/2" across at the crotch to 10" at the cuff.
A classic example of a Civil War period US Navy enlisted uniform in excellent condition and rarely encountered with both the jumper and trousers.
