Civil War Letters From A Soldier At the Siege of Petersburg to His Sister Six letters ranging from one to four pages, about 4.5" x 7.25" each, written from a camp near Petersburg, Virginia, July 2-24, 1864, from an "A. Morrison" to his sister. This set of letters provides an interesting glimpse into the life of an average Civil War-era soldier. Morrison writes his sister that "...Reble [sic] Raids into Maryland may stop the mails for a few days..." and "There is Considerable Cannonading every day along the lines. The folks at home don't know much about what war is but still it is not so bad as Mother would think it was. Some of them has [sic] it a good deal harder than others. We have not had so much fighting to do as some of them has had but I am satisfied with what fighting I have done...". As always a soldier longs for food from home, and Morrison makes frequent mention of huckleberries, strawberries, pears, peaches, and other foods he misses. In addition are passages expressing concern that his father won't be able to get the hay harvested without help and general inquiries about friends and acquaintances back home. The letters are written in a legible hand and are in fine condition. Included with the lot is a 1/6th plate tintype of what is purported to be Morrison, in uniform, and his sister. Given the clothing styles portrayed it appears that this is a post-Civil War image. The tintype is clear with sharp detail with only some minor bending at the corners.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
