Civil War: Ledger for the 37th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, Company A, Which Includes Rosters, Details of Killed and Wounded, Weapons, Equipment, Etc., 1862-1863. The ledger measures 8 x 12 ½-inches, bound in marbled boards with a leather spine and corners. Approximately 50 pages in the ledger have been used for rosters, inventory of weapons, equipment lists, etc. The ledger covers a period from roughly July, 1862 to mid-1863. The ledger also contains a 1909 dated letter to C. W. Hawes, a captain in the regiment, from a man who as a child was present at the Battle of Pea Ridge, whose family rescued and cared for a critically wounded man in the 37th and seeks contact information. The 37th Illinois was organized in Chicago and mustered into Federal service on September 18, 1861. The regiment was nicknamed the "Fremont Rifles" and "Illinois Greyhounds". The regiment was present at the battle of Pea Ridge, Prairie Grove and the Siege of Vicksburg.

Condition: Very good. With obvious wear to the original boards, the front board starting to become detached. The contents have some areas of toning and staining but the text is on the whole legible. A great item for research.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
