    Description

Civil War: Important Recruiting Broadside Seeking to Protect the Mail and Emigrant Route from Missouri to California. Matted and framed (under Plexiglas) 12" x 14.5" broadside titled "200 Recruits Wanted for Merrill's Horse." It is signed by Captain Garrison Harker, stationed at Utica, Missouri. He asks for recruits to "protect the Mail and Emigrant route to California, which is one of the most healthy locations troops can have. The recent successes should impell [sic] all lovers of law, order and the principles of free Government to rush to the standard of their country, and in 90 days they will be able to say they had the honor of helping save it." Despite the appeal of a pleasant climate, the soldiers no doubt had to contend with minor inconveniences such as hostile Indians! Terrific content regarding an oft-overlooked aspect of the Civil War. Some damp stains with loss at top, as shown. We've never seen a recruiting broadside on this color paper. Neat!
