Civil War Home Made Confederate Cartridge Box Picked Up At Gettysburg. When this box was originally sold by Heritage in June of 2007, realizing $1800, it was accompanied by a letter from the North Missouri Historical Society which stated the box was picked up on the Gettysburg Battlefield immediately after the battle by a local family. The letter further went on to state that the box belonged to a Confederate sharpshooter, dressed in civilian clothing, who hid his rifle and cartridge box in a tree and fled to avoid capture. The consignor, the original purchaser of the box, has, however, mislaid the original letter. The box is 6" X 2 1/4" X 2 1/2" high. It is constructed by simply attaching a tarred leather flap with tacks along the back to the wooden block, which is drilled with 24 .48 caliber holes. Closure is affected with a small hole on the front of the flap that fits over a small iron finial. There are two thin leather belt loops on the back, one broken but present, and the wooden block on the back is inlaid with a small brass bird in flight with a star above. The wooden block was obviously dyed black when the box was constructed now with a few scuffs exposing raw wood. There is a date "June 4, 1861" written in ink on the front inside of the flap. Other than the torn belt loop the box is in fine sound, complete condition and certainly a unique Confederate artifact from the Gettysburg Battlefield.
